OSI/Parsons Information Design Fellowship

I received a Fellowship in Information Design through Parsons and the Open Society Institute for the summer of 2010. Throughout the summer, I worked on various design projects with other Parsons fellows based at NGOs around the world. I worked on print campaigns, logos, branding and web design and development. A main project I worked on was designing and developing the hub website for Parsons and OSI at osi.parsons.edu with Bruce Drummond, Steve Varga and Andrea Bradshaw. The site aggregates all the fellowship projects Parsons fellows worked on in previous years, and the NGOs they worked with. The site is currently being developed, but it is almost complete. Check back soon to see the completed version.

NYC Most Wanted iPhone app

I made this mobile app for iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad. This app shows NYC's most wanted list. It parses and aggregates detailed information on NYC's suspects, showing their pictures, crime descriptions, and much more. A user can submit a tip if they encounter a suspect as well. This app was more an experimentation on parsing XML feeds off the web with ObjC if anything. It's definitely not optimized, and needs a lot of fine tuning. All the information comes from NYC Crimestoppers.

Parsons Design & Technology Bootcamp 2010

I was selected to be a Parsons Teaching Fellow to teach the incoming graduate 2012 D&T class in a Parsons program known as Bootcamp. I will be teaching web design and development specifically for 3 weeks in August, and will have approximately 15 students. Additionally, I collaborated in designing and building out the main Bootcamp site with Chris Driscoll and Chris Calmeyn. The theme for the camp is based off of summer camps people went to as kids.

Popcorn & Politics

As part of a collaborative class between Parsons and the New York Times, Ramsey Nasser (he's a wiz kid :) and I created a visualization of the relationship between the film industry and the 2008 US presidential candidates. We pulled data from the New York Times Campaign Finance API, IMDB, film-releases.com and the FEC. The visualization depicts how much money producers from specific movies donated to 2008 political candidates. In addition, we presented the project at the New York Times in February 2010 and the project has been posted on the NYTimes site here (watch the video).

NYTimes Real Estate App

I created a simple mobile application for Nokia phones using Flash Lite. I made this in my Mobile Media class. It simply hooks up to the New York Times Real Estate API. You can input your NYC borough, dates and percentile to see the listing prices. If you would like the .swf, please contact me and I can send it to you to test it out. You can then bluetooth it to your device to use it.

MTA Advisory iPhone app

I created this conceptual iPhone application for NYC subway commuters. The app works with QR codes to highlight current MTA service advisories, and allows the user to navigate the NYC subway system with ease. At some point I would like to try and develop this app.

Laff Trak iPhone app

I created this iPhone app that is available on the app store. I created the simple app to see what the process was like to get an app up and running on the app store. The app plays sitcom audience tracks when you press buttons. For instance, if your friend walks into the room, you can press the applause button and the app will play an audio track of laughter and applause. I actually made this as a quick and dirty app while in school, to see what the Apple app submission process was like. It was interesting.

TripList

I designed this concept site for baby-boomers who like to travel a lot. It's a simple interface, focusing on doing one thing and doing it well so as not to over-burden the baby-boomer user. A user can log in, log their trip and then quickly send the trip post to friends and family. Log in with "tommy" for the username, and "druck" for the password to test it out.

Mozilla Design Challenge: DogTag

Collaborated with Chris Driscoll, Kurt Bieg and Ramsey Nasser in creating this browser concept for Mozilla. We participated in the Mozilla Labs University Design Challenge Fall '09 to innovate new ways to use browser history within Firefox. We came up with "DogTag," in which you unobtrusively tag webpages, and can easily recall them later with different filters like using color.

Espnrise.com

ESPN acquired RISE Magazine, and I was transferred into the ESPN.COM department where I became an Associate Designer. Because I was heavily involved with risemag.com, I was heavily involved in rebranding and rolling the old risemag.com into espnrise.com. I worked with Art Director Lara Sasaran and Lead Designer Juan Sichon from ESPN to roll out the new high school sports section for ESPN.com. The site has since been redesigned again.

Risemag.com

My first job out of undergrad was working at RISE Magazine as the web producer and designer for risemag.com. RISE Magazine was a sports publication for teen athletes. I wore all the hats for the web department, doing everything from design, development, SEO, SEM and branding. It was quite a job, but I learned a lot about the web really fast. Risemag.com published content from the magazine, but also had it's own unique community presence for high school athletes, similar to all the other social networking sites. Eventually, ESPN bought RISE, and risemag.com was swallowed up into ESPNRISE.com. Just nice to see how my design work has progressed from this.
